COLLEAGUE CREDIT
Ms. Katie Williams shares that Baleigh is an all-around rockstar teacher, especially in her first year. She, however, deserves special recognition for the hard work she has put into directing TWO drama productions in her elective course. Students performed Reindeer Games for us right before winter break and, this week, presented The FairyTale Network. She has taken the initiative to revive our drama program and has done a wonderful job! The performers and their audiences are so glad! Way to go, Ms. Scott!
WILDCAT OF THE WEEK
Ms. Williams shares that Joanna is the definition of a good friend. She has a big heart and is concerned for others and their well-being. She looks out for her peers and helps to meet needs of others. We could all use a friend like Joanna.
TESTING FOR VIRTUAL STUDENTS
Please note the required testing times for virtual students. All virtual students need to arrive at Wurtland Middle School at 7:45 a.m. The noted test administration times are estimates, and pick-up times may vary based on student completion times.
Today has been a pretty cool day for Wurtland Middle School, as some of our students participated in a Google Meet with Kentucky’s newest Poet Laureate, Silas House. Did we discuss Wurtland Middle as an anchor school in one of his first projects?! Absolutely!
It’s Administrative Professionals Day! Barb Tussey and Barbara Nelson are heroes in our building. No matter the situation, they are on the frontlines. They love our students, support our teachers, and take care of our administrators. Barbs, We appreciate you endlessly!

Congratulations to our Greenup County boys middle school soccer team! Last night, they defeated West Carter with a final score of 2 - 0. We are proud of this win and proud of these kids!

SOURCES OF STRENGTH SPIRIT WEEK FOOD DRIVE
In accordance with Sources of Strength Spirit Week, we are having a school-wide food drive.
The gray section of the Sources of Strength Color Wheel focuses on generosity. If you are able, please bring non-perishable food items:
Ramen Noodles
Canned Goods: soups/ravioli/pasta/lasagna
Instant oatmeal (bags)
Macaroni & cheese (boxes or individual cups)
Pinto beans (canned or bags)

Spaghetti sauce (canned or plastic jars)
FIELD DAY
We have scheduled our annual field day event for 5.23.23, and we are so looking forward to a day filled with fun and healthy competitions! Once again, every grade will have matching field day t-shirts. We are asking all students to bring $5.00 to their first period teachers to cover the costs associated with the shirts as soon as possible. We're sharing the final design. After they are delivered, students will be tie-dying the shirts.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF THE TRI-STATE WALL BUILD: THANK YOU
How do we possibly begin to describe the incredibly amazing day that we had at Wurtland Middle School yesterday during our second wall build? It may not be possible to do so accurately. Still, we have a myriad of individuals to thank for helping to make this amazing day happen for our students. Mr. Scott Bowling describes this build day as Wurtland Middle School’s “Super Bowl”.
First, we need to thank David Michael, the board members of Habitat for Humanity of the Tri-State, and the amazing Habitat for Humanity work crew. David believed in Wurtland Middle School so strongly that he wrote a grant for this year’s build to happen. Thank you to the Foundation for the Tri-State for believing that we could make great things happen! They have consistently shown both trust and confidence in us. The kindness and graciousness they showed to our students cannot be described. To say that we are the first middle school in the country to collaborate with Habitat for Humanity is something of which we will not grow tired of sharing, and, now, for two consistent years in a row.
Second, we must thank all of the amazing donors who generously made sure food, drinks, and snacks were available all day. We owe a special note of thanks to Beth Grant for her quick work in soliciting and covering all of these donations. In addition, Beth, Matthew, and Lily Grant spent the day volunteering at the build site, making certain that all meals and refreshments were delivered, served, and tended to throughout the entirety of the day. Thank you to Mr. Bobby Hall for providing drinks for the day. Thank you to Tim Sublett and Tim Horton’s for providing coffee, hot chocolate, and doughnuts. Thank you to Andrew Imel for providing snacks. Thank you to Wendy Baker for her generous donation of cake pops. The students absolutely loved them! Thank you to Matthew Warnock for providing 45 hot and fresh Rapid Fired Pizzas that we were able to serve to students for a post-build pizza party. Everyone involved in this project is most grateful for the kindnesses extended by each of you.
Third, we must thank our amazing Wurtland Middle School family who stepped up to this challenge without reservation: Brandi Litteral, Scott Bowling, Rebecca Spencer, Alex Young, Shane Runion, and so many more. No matter what has been asked of each of you, you were quick to, as you do each day, make amazing contributions to benefit our students. Tom Crump took the time to, “Move that Bus!” He did so with a smile, and his enthusiasm added so much to the day!
Finally, we must thank the family of the late Rhonda Nickel Nunley. Connie and Ron Nickel and Skip and Rebecca Spencer generously sponsored our crew's work shirts. On Friday, we worked to further Rhonda's legacy and the deep roots that she helped to grow between Habitat for Humanity and Greenup County on what would’ve been her birthday celebration of turning 50. Ron, Connie, Kimberly, Becky, and Skip all joined us yesterday to participate in another amazing experience!
Friday was evidence that we can continue to make a difference together, and, together, we will continue to make a difference. Supporters of this project have already started talking about next year. We will build two houses or an entire neighborhood?!

Nurse Tara Adams shares that John was recently able to recognize another student's medical emergency. John acted quickly to make Nurse Tara aware. John stepped up to help when needed! Way to go, John!
SOURCES OF STRENGTH SPIRIT WEEK BEGINS MONDAY!
In the latest of our Specialty Speaker Series, EdRising students met with Mrs. Paula Pleasant. As our district teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Mrs. Pleasant gave students an introduction to audiograms, assistive technologies, the differences in ASL and SEE and how that impacts education. Students really enjoyed the cochlear implant simulation and learning some basic words and phrases in sign language. Thank you Mrs. Pleasant for all you do for our students and sharing with us today.
We are very proud of our Lego Robotics Team! They competed at the Kentucky STLP State Championship this week after advancing from the regional competition. They brought home the Enthusiasm Award and placed 5th in the state in RBX - Robo Challenge Extreme.
