This Musketeer just made All-State in band! Sarah Pierce plays flute, and those who know her say that this achievement is not surprising! Sarah, a senior, is a great student who has continually worked hard at her craft. She brings back a high honor to GC, and we couldn’t be more proud. Sarah said she auditioned last year as well, and was thrilled to earn the distinction this year. When asked about what could be different this year, Sarah had a few comments on the current culture of GC’s music program. “I’m really enjoying band this year, and Mr. Coleman is doing a great job,” she said. When asked about the increased presence of marching band at GC, she explained, “marching band has really increased morale… it’s great to have it back.” She further elaborated that Mr. Coleman (band director and Marine Corp veteran), “has put in a lot of work, and I think it has rubbed off on us… he’s really trying to push us.” We’re thrilled to see Sarah achieve All-State, and are so proud of her! Congrats, Musketeer! #BelieveInGC

This is Irelyn and John John, and our encounter with these 3rd grade students today was both adorable and inspiring! Today our “camera man” was filming a fun video during lunch when John John came up and said, “hey… me and my friend Irelyn need to talk to you!” When the camera man informed John John that he wasn’t a teacher at the school, the young man insisted that they needed to talk! He even made sure to point out where they’d be sitting so that we could find him and his friend. When the video wrapped up, we went to find John John and his friend. Irelyn didn’t waste any time explaining that she needed our camera man to teach her how to work a video camera because she’s making a documentary! While this is her project, she recruited John John and some others to help her out with it and it’s obvious that everyone is on a mission to make it happen. Irelyn went on to explain that the documentary is about a game the students made up to play during recess, and that she’s making this documentary as a part of a class. It turns out that every detail of Irelyn’s story was spot on. This is a project she’s working on for Mrs. Stout’s “genius hour” class. If you’d witnessed this whole encounter in person, you would have been smiling from ear to ear by the way these 3rd graders were equal parts professional, motivated, and excited! It makes us full of pride and gratitude to see our students enjoying such wonderful experiences! #BelieveInGC

This is a duo that will warm your heart. Meet Pyper and her teacher, Mrs. Ashley Wireman. Pyper has special needs, and while parents of special needs children often worry about their child’s day at school, Pyper’s mom does not. Her mom, Amy, says that Pyper is “living her best life” at GC. She went on to gush about Mrs. Wireman, saying that, “she’s a special needs mom herself, so she knows exactly what I’m feeling… I trust and love Mrs. Wireman and everyone that works with Pyper.” It turns out that Mrs. Wireman’s position as a special education teacher is extra special to her. Mrs. Wireman explained that her own son was diagnosed with autism 9 years ago and that the special education department at GC did a great job supporting her. Having a son with autism, she said, “When I began teaching special education, I knew that I wanted to contribute to a program that I want my own son to enjoy.” When Mrs. Wireman first took this position she said that Pyper’s mom, Amy, literally picked her up off the ground with a hug. Mom to mom, they share a joy in knowing that their children are cared for. Amy said that the good news doesn’t stop with the teachers, though. GC has students who volunteer as “peer mentors”, and they spend time assisting students with special needs. Amy said, “the peer mentors are so loving, caring, and accepting — they go out of their way to involve Pyper.” She went on to say that the peer mentors are exactly the same way outside of school. “Pyper wants to go to every home game and sit with her friends, and the students flock to her,” Amy said. GC’s motto of “All For One, One For All” is more than a reference to the 3 Musketeers — it’s a way of doing things around here that makes big differences in people’s lives. #BelieveInGC

Holocaust survivor Alice Dreifuss Goldstein visited GC today to speak to our students. You always hope that students realize what a great privilege an experience like this is, and their response to Alice said it all! Look at the students lined up to talk to her and get their books signed. Special thanks to Mr. Alvey for arranging this incredible visit, as well as the yearbook students who took photos! #BelieveInGC

Today GC’s school resource officers talked to students about “teens and the law,” as a part of the Musketeer 101 program. Attempting to reach GC’s new and soon-to-be drivers, our officers covered safe driving, interacting with police officers, and DUI related topics. “We hope that our talks make students think twice about their decisions when driving… we hope they heard something today that they’ll remember,” the officers said. Thank you Chief Kearns and Officer Gollihue for doing their part to protect and serve GC students! #BelieveInGC

Friday was a very special day! While celebrating the Marine Corps birthday, Superintendent Moresea officially proclaimed GC to be a Purple Heart School District. It's a gesture to honor our military and soldiers wounded in combat. We were joined by Mr. Joseph Steele, who represented the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. Steele is a community member, Veteran, and Purple Heart recipient who brought this gesture to our attention. Our JROTC cadets did an absolutely fantastic job at performing the ceremony for the Marine Corps birthday, and the student body in attendance made us proud by showing the utmost respect for it all. #BelieveInGC

This Friday we will hold a ceremony officially proclaiming GC a “Purple Heart School District.” A local veteran and Purple Heart recipient brought this gesture to our attention, and we didn’t hesitate to proceed. It is a way we can show our appreciation for GC’s military heritage and wounded veterans. We will also be celebrating the Marine Corps birthday, as our JROTC is a Marine Corps JROTC. We deeply value our JROTC program and all it does for student character. We invite any veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and their families to join us at GCHS at 2:00 on Friday, November 17. #BelieveInGC

This is hard to believe!! Did you know that there are 44 GC busses that drive 2,800 miles PER DAY? For reference, that is from Greenup County to Los Angeles with enough miles left over to backtrack to Tucson, Arizona! It cumulated to over a half million miles last year alone. Thank you to Mr. Fletcher (Dir. of Transportation) and our amazing bus drivers for all the miles they travel to make sure GC students get to school each day! #BelieveInGC

Another GC teacher with accolades to celebrate! Congrats to Tiffany Boggs for being named an "Innovative Teacher Fellow" by KDE's Innovative Learning Network! As KDE (Kentucky Department of Education) states, "There are many schools and districts in Kentucky implementing learner-centered practices and trailblazing innovative strategies. At the heart of these practices are the teachers who guide, build relationships with, and support Kentucky’s students." Way to go, Tiffany Boggs! #BelieveInGC
